Laboratory Studies of Polar Ice Processes
نویسنده
چکیده
OBJECTIVES Our objectives are to measure in the laboratory the way in which waves and sea ice interact, and to compare the results with existing theoretical models, and field and satellite observations. Specifically, we are using laboratory results to determine the role of ocean swell and wind-waves in the growth of sea ice in open water regions such as polynyas, and satellite observations to help understand the processes governing the large scale summer retreat of the Arctic ice edge, and also the role of the sea ice in the Japan Sea in the generation of the Liman coastal current.

Hydroxyl Radical in/on Illuminated Polar Snow: Formation Rates, Lifetimes, and Steady-State Concentrations
While hydroxyl radical (OH) in the snowpack is likely a dominant oxidant for organic species and bromide, little is known about the kinetics or steady-state concentrations of OH on/in snow 10 and ice. Here we measure the formation rate, lifetime, and concentration of OH for illuminated polar snow samples studied in the laboratory and in the field. Laboratory studies show that OH kinetics and st...
متن کاملObservations related to tetrahydrofuran and methane hydrates for laboratory studies of hydrate-bearing sediments
[1] The interaction among water molecules, guest gas molecules, salts, and mineral particles determines the nucleation and growth behavior of gas hydrates in natural sediments. Hydrate of tetrahydrofuran (THF) has long been used for laboratory studies of gas hydrate-bearing sediments to provide close control on hydrate concentrations and to overcome the long formation history of methane hydrate...
متن کاملSediment Melt-Migration Dynamics in Perennial Antarctic Lake Ice
We examined sediment melt-migration dynamics in the ice cover of Lake Fryxell, Taylor Valley, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, using a combination of laboratory experiments, field observations, and modeling. The specific objectives were to determine the thermal conditions required for sediment melt and how sediment migration rates vary with meteorological forcings and ice microstructure. These ...
متن کاملInstruments and Methods A high-precision method for measurement of paleoatmospheric CO2 in small polar ice samples
We describe a high-precision method, now in use in our laboratory, for measuring the CO2 mixing ratio of ancient air trapped in polar ice cores. Occluded air in ice samples weighing 8–15 g is liberated by crushing with steel pins at –358C and trapped at –2638C in a cryogenic cold trap. CO2 in the extracted air is analyzed using gas chromatography. Replicate measurements for several samples of h...
متن کاملProgress in Polar Oceans Research Using ERS - 1 Data
Data from IRS-1, especially from the AMI Image Mode, or SAR, have been particularly useful in providing data on ice type and motion and oceanic mesoscale featuxes. These data have been used in studies of ocean and ice circulation, climate processes, mesoscale processes near the ice edge, freshwater fluxes, and convection, and have also proved useful in support of operations in ice covered seas,
